Anderson Cup Final Preview

Instonians stand in the way of Kilkeel completing a trophy treble when the teams clash in the Anderson Cup final at the Dub on Thursday night (8pm).

The Co Down side have already lifted the Ulster Premier League title after beating Mossley to capture the Kirk Cup on Boxing Day. However, Kilkeel captain Gareth Russell knows that Instonians will be anxious to get their hands on a trophy that has eluded them for 23 years.

"I would say that we expect a difficult game against Instonians that will be very tight to call based on our previous games this season," he said.

"Both teams try to play an exciting attacking style of hockey so it should be an entertaining match as it always is against them."

"So far it has been an excellent season for the club and although the last few weeks have been up and down with uncertainty around whether the cup would go ahead and difficulty with the scheduling we will be trying our best to add the last bit of silverware to the collection."

"If we perform to the standard I know the boys are capable of then I have no doubt what the end result will be."

Instonians player-coach Steven Redpath is happy to transfer the burden of favouritism onto the opposition in time honoured fashion.

"Kilkeel enter the game as favourites and deserve credit as they have shown themselves to be the most consistent this year, deserving winners of the Kirk Cup and league," he said.

"We know they have always been a very effective counter attacking side but have improved their shape on the ball this year and shown a lot more control in games."

"As for ourselves, we enter the game feeling prepared and confident after improved results in the past eight weeks. We have great belief within our group that if we can get our performance level to a high standard we have enough ability within the group to win the match."

"We aim to remain focused on what we need to do and believe that if we can stick to that for the full 70 minutes  we will come out on right side of the result."
