John Minnis Estate Agents Burney Cup

Wallace High School coach Gareth Kidd insists he and his team are relishing the challenge of playing holders Sullivan upper in the semi-finals of the John Minnis Estate Agents Burney Cup next week.

The game is a repeat of last year's final and Sullivan can justifiably claim to be the best schoolboy team at the moment, having already lifted silverware this season.

The winners of next Thursday's clash will meet either Methodist College or Friends' who contest the other semi-final. But Wallace certainly aren't looking that far ahead as they know how tough a task lies ahead against the Holywood school.

"We're all very much looking forward to the challenge of playing Sullivan, who are the team to beat having already won the McCullough Cup this season." said Gareth.

"They beat us in the group stages of that competition reasonably comfortably but a recent 2-2 draw against them has us going into the tie with lots of confidence. It should be a cracking match between two exciting teams who possess lots of potential match winners."

"We played exceptionally well to beat Banbridge Academy and Regent House in the competition so far and can't wait for next Thursday's game."

Sullivan have a potential match winner in team captain Fergus Gibson, who has plenty of reason to want to add another Burney medal to his collection.

"It's my last year at school and obviously, to win a Burney and McCullough double in the same season would be a very special achievement." he said.

Friends' who are having their best season for some time, will start marginal favourites against Methody in the first semi-final.

But Methody's 1-0 win over RBAI in a hard fought Belfast derby quarter final suggests another close contest lies ahead.

The two semi-final will be staged as a double header at Lisnagarvey on Thursday and the draw for the Plate semis was also made this week.

Banbridge Academy will face Bangor Grammar and Kilkeel HS or Royal & Prior will be up against Grosvenor Grammar in the other tie with the date(s) still to be confirmed.

John Minnis Estate Agents Burney Cup Semi-finals (Lisnagarvey HC, Thursday 8 March):
Friends' School Lisburn v Methodist College (1.30pm)
Wallace High School v Sullivan Upper (3.15pm)
