Successful U11/U13 Season

The U11 and U13 seasons came to a close last week with the Linwoods Healthfoods club finals taking place on the 15th and 22nd of April.

Playball, Stormont hosted the Girls U11 and U13 Cup Finals with the U13 Plate finals taking place on the 6th of May. The U11 ‘Super 6’ finals saw 36 clubs descending to Playball in what was an amazing spectacle with so many players and spectators in one place all celebrating one thing; youth hockey.

In an action packed day with loads of hockey for the large crowd to enjoy it all came down to four teams. Portadown played Pegasus in the Cup final and Dungannon played Ballymena in the Plate final. Two fantastic finals were played out with loads of talent on show however there has to be an eventual outcome and Portadown came out trumps in the Cup final along with their close neighbours Dunagnnon in the Plate Final.

On the same date the U11 boys also took to the stage at Ballymena Academy. With 29 teams entered it was the biggest U11 boy’s finals we have ever hosted and this is all down to the fantastic work being done by our clubs. Morning group stages saw superb play from our boys with plenty of talent on show for the large crowd that came down to cheer them on. After lunch saw the latter stages of the tournament and in the end we had a cup final between Instonians and Portadown and a plate final between Lisnagarvey and Banbridge.  The final was played out in end to end fashion with Instonians eventually coming out on top and they were joined by Lisnagarvey who overcame Banbridge in the final of the plate.

Sunday the 22nd saw our Linwoods Healthfoods Extreme 8 finals taking place at Ballymena Academy for the boys and Playball for the girls.

In a change to the format this year we included a qualifying day in March whereby teams would either go to the cup finals or the plate finals. The Cup Finals took place with 16 teams coming together to battle it out to be our Extreme 8 champion.

The standard of hockey was fantastic and with plenty of tea, coffee and buns available (courtesy of our Ulster U18 Girls) it was a brilliant day for youth hockey. The finals brought together the two teams that played the most consistent throughout the day; Dromore and Lurgan. In a derby final nothing was left in reserve and both teams played out a superb final for the large crowd to enjoy. In the end Dromore edged the final 1 – 0 and brought the title and trophy back to Ferris Park.

After lunch teams were split between the cup competition and plate competition. The final of the cup saw Banbridge pitted against Cookstown and in the Plate Annadale up against Instonians. The cup final was end to end with chances going astray for each team. Banbridge however managed to slot in two chances and came away with a deserving 2 – 0 win. In the Plate Final both teams cancelled each other out. Annadale however managed to grab a goal and go on to lift the plate.

In the boys Extreme 8s final we saw 24 teams battling it out to claim the trophy. The morning group games saw some impressive displays and with plenty of food and drinks on offer courtesy of Ballymena Hockey Club it promised to be an action packed and enjoyable day of youth hockey.

Thank you to our Youth Hockey sponsors Linwoods Healthfoods. They have been amazing this year in helping push youth hockey on and give more girls and boys the opportunity to play our sport. Also thank you to Joe Woods, Chris Harte, Adare Brady, Shirley McCay and Andy Smyth for handing out medal and trophies to our young players.  And finally a massive thank you to our clubs, without their support these tournaments and blitzes would not be possible. Our unsung heroes who deserve all the credit and plaudits they deserve. Now to look towards our U13 Plate finals on the 6th of May at Playball and the finals of our U15 competitions.
