Ulster Hockey Coaching and Officiating Awards 2018

Ulster Hockey have launched the 2018 Coaching and Officiating Awards to recognise the outstanding contribution of hockey coaches and officials during the 2017-2018 Season and the role they play in encouraging participation, development and excellence.

There are five award categories and this document provides further information on each category, together with key evidence the judging panel will look for when making decisions.

Children’s Coach of the Year
This award recognises the outstanding contribution of a children’s coach to the development of young people’s skills, understanding, enjoyment, and lifestyle through sport.

Young Coach of the Year
This award recognises the important work carried out by an up and coming coach through his or her coaching achievements to date and the impact they have made on the people they coach.

Club Performance Coach of the Year
This award recognises the achievements of a coach working to develop emerging and talented performers from within club hockey.

Umpire of the Year
This award recognises the outstanding contribution and achievements of a panel umpire who is regularly officiating matches in Ulster and/or Ireland.

Club Umpire of the Year
This award recognises the outstanding contribution and commitment of a non-panel umpire who is regularly officiating clubs matches.


Key Points to Consider
  • Nominations should include evidence to support the impact of the coach or official in the category specified. This evidence should be supported with facts and figures where possible.
  • All nominated coaches must hold an appropriate UHU/IHA coaching qualification.
  • All nominated coaches or umpires should have made a significant impact during the 2017-2018 season. 
  • The judging panel can only take into account information supplied on the nomination form.

All completed forms must be submitted by 12.00pm on Monday 30 April 2018.

2016/17 Club Performance Coach of the Year was Craig McGrugan.




2016/17 Young Coach of the Year was Matthew Armstrong-Sanchez.
