Weekend Hockey - Roundup

Instonians underlined their reputation as Kirk Cup favourites as they opened their account with a comfortable 3-0 win over Belfast Harlequins at Deramore Park on Saturday.

The Belfast club were relegated from the Irish Hockey League last season and won the Kirk Cup in their last term in the Ulster Premier League two years ago when they easily defeated Mossley in the final. Harlequins occasionally made life difficult for their local rivals on Saturday but Instonians were more clinical in front of goal.

They got off to the best possible start, after Quins had lost possession around the half-way line in the second minute, Chris Kirk fired a reverse stick shot past Iain Kelly in the home goal. Nine minutes later, it was 2-0 when Instonians skipper William Robinson converted the first penalty-corner of the game.

Harlequins had their best spell of the first-half after that setback and they went close to cutting the deficit following a set-piece of their own. But it was the visitors who struck next when, nine minutes into the second-half, Michael Patterson committed a foul in the circle and Kirk converted the resulting penalty-stroke in clinical fashion.

Kelly denied Kirk his hat-trick late on when he got down well to save and opposite number Sam Brown also pulled off a fine stop to prevent a consolation goal from Harlequins.

Elsewhere, former Instonians player Chris Barnes hit a hat-trick as Civil Service opened their account with a 6-3 win over Queen's at Stormont. Keith McWilliams also chalked up a treble as Newry defeated Portadown 4-3 at Edenvilla while the game between Mossley and Kilkeel ended in a 4-4 draw at the Glade.
